TMJ disorders cause tenderness and pain to the temporomandiublar joint. This joint allows you to talk, chew, and yawn. Between 5-15% of people in the US experience pain associated with TMJ disorders.
Signs and Symptoms:
- Pain or tenderness in jaw
- Aching pain in and around the ear
- Difficulty chewing
- Locking of the jaw
- Headache
- Audible clicking or grating sensation
Physical Therapy Treatment:
The physical therapist will assess your bite, muscle flexibility, and joint movement. Both you and your physical therapist will work on manual hands-on treatment along with other modalities to decrease muscle tightness as well as relaxation and posture techniques to keep your symptoms down.
